September brings so many exciting topics in kindergarten – apples, colorful leaves, back-to-school, and of course fall! There are so many amazing read alouds for these topics and today I am sharing some of my favorites!

Books About Apples

Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship by Edward Hemingway

This book is the perfect read aloud if you are teaching an apple theme. But is also perfect for the month of September when students are making friends and building a classroom community.

Apples by Gail Gibbons

This nonfiction book is perfect for kindergarten students. The book is jam packed full of just about any topic on apples you could think of – where do apples come from, Johnny Appleseed, how they grow, parts of an apple, and more! This book is an absolute MUST if you teach an apple unit.

Johnny Appleseed by Jodie Shepherd

Johnny Appleseed Day is one of my favorite classroom celebrations! It is celebrated on September 26th and leads itself to SO many wonderful apple activities. This book is the perfect way to introduce Johnny Appleseed to your class!

Books About Fall

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Park

I love using this book as my first day of fall read aloud. We make an anchor chart of all the signs that fall is arriving and compare it to what we see in our own neighborhoods.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Colandro

Who doesn’t love a good Old Lady book? This one is perfect for fall. Students will love guessing what will happen after the Old Lady swallows everything. Need a follow-up activity? Try this craft here!

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

A classic! Kids will love the pictures that are made from actual leaves and seeing where the “leaf man” goes when the wind blows. After reading the story, head out and gather some leaves to create your own leaf man!

Colors of Change: Fall is Here by Tex Stanly

The vocabulary in this book is so rich and poetic. This story makes the perfect read aloud for fall and helping kids to notice the changing colors around them.

Books for Back to School

The Bad Seed by Jory John

Who doesn’t love this series? This book is the perfect read aloud for September when you are in the thick of teaching routines, modeling behaviors, and getting to know everyone!

Snippets by Diane Alber

If you enjoy the Little Spot books, this book is going to be a hit! This story is wonderful for building a sense of community and belonging. After reading the story, we create our own snippet city from the book and display it in our classroom to show that everyone belongs!

I Have Ants in My Pants by Julia Cook

Do you have some wiggly students in your class? Or a child at home that is still working on self-control? This story is perfect for littles who need some strategies to control the ants in their pants!

I hope you have found some wonderful new read alouds to add to your own classroom or home library! Do you have another favorite September read aloud? I’d love to hear below! 👇
